Appraisals & Management of Personal Property
Automotive memorabilia – Automobilia – is one of the largest collecting disciplines today. Collectors of automobilia typically accumulate items such as banners, fuel pumps, trophies, autographs, signs, and brochures. All of these conjure feelings of nostalgia and cherished memories.
Some of the flashiest items an auto collector can own are auto-related signs. They tell the history of the auto industry and the roadside in the United States. They’re classic Americana.
One of the most inviting autmobilia collectibles is the neon sign. It made its debut in the early 20th century and continues as the hottest category in automobilia. One ardent collector had their collection of neon signs insured in 2014. They included a large and pristine red Pegasus sign by Mobil, originally valued at $10,000. When the collector came to BCG for the appraisal to update their insurance, we discovered that the Pegasus sign had tripled in value.
As antique signs can range in value from a few hundred to thousands of dollars, it’s important to look for age, condition, brand, rarity, and complexity of design. While restored pieces can be desirable, sometimes the most rustic and flawed sign can be enjoyed by the ardent collector for the memories it evokes.
Signage should continue to be both valuable and trendy due to its place in history and its aesthetic. With the hundreds of types of cars, auto manufacturers and auto-related events in America’s history, the automobilia world holds something of value for every enthusiast at almost any price point.
